This book is not really for a historian, but it really gives you a somewhat reasonable picture of the life of Alfred the Great. Puts together a lot of the pieces of his life. The author is clearly a little biased in favor of the Saxons or English, but it really does a great job of helping a person to understand what early medieval England in /5().
This book is a valuable and fascinating resource shedding light on the life and career on King Alfred of Wessex, who became known (in my opinion deservedly so) in later centuries as ‘The Great’.
In the simplest level the main body of the book is simple an account of Alfred’s reign, written by the Welsh monk, Asser/5(56). Alfred the Great was a ninth-century scholar-king celebrated for saving southern England from pagan invaders.
